Refrigerated Cabinet Review to Increase Energy Efficiency

The Expert Group, commissioned by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority of New Zealand on behalf of the national Equipment Energy Efficiency (E3) Committee, conducted research and prepared a technical report to support a Regulatory Impact Statement (RIS) regarding potential Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for refrigerated display cabinets.

This undertaking entailed a comprehensive examination of the markets in both Australia and New Zealand, including sales figures, efficiency metrics, and cost analyses. Additionally, the Expert Group performed RIS modelling to assess stock levels, efficiency standards, and cost-benefit analyses across various scenarios. A thorough technical review of standards and critical issues was also conducted.

Furthermore, the Expert Group chaired a Technical Working Group to oversee the review of ISO/EN Standards and regulatory frameworks for refrigeration display and storage cabinets. Workshops were organized, and testing in supplier laboratories was supervised to ensure accuracy and reliability.

The culmination of these efforts led to the implementation of the Greenhouse and Energy Minimum Standards (Refrigerated Cabinets) Determination 2020, which introduced a suite of standards, including ISO 23953 compliance, aimed at enhancing energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.
